In particular, I wanted to explore the position held by your typical, politically subverted medical journal. I could have picked on The Lancet, but I chose instead the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Gemini started out as one might expect, providing ostensibly scientific justification for the journal’s editorial position, but it didn’t take too long before the politics were exposed. As always, my questions are in italics and the bold emphasis is exactly as provided in Gemini’s responses. Here goes – I hope you find the journey interesting:

Just in case it finally doesn’t, I’ll point out here that it is a link to an ONS paper titled ‘Climate-related mortality and hospital admissions, England and Wales: 2001 to 2020’, in which the following is stated:
“Over a 20-year period the estimated change in deaths associated with warm or cold temperature was a net decrease of 555,094, an average of 27,755 deaths per year (Table 1). A decrease in deaths from outcomes associated with cold temperature greatly outnumbers deaths associated with warm temperature.”
Whatever they say now, they can’t take that back – they can only expunge it from their records. It would then fall to the likes of Cliscep to keep the truth alive.

John – your quote in the comment above has me confused. Had a look a table 1. If I read it correctly it says –
2001 to 2020 – More warm days -45,538 fewer deaths
2001 to 2020 – Fewer cold days -509,556 fewer deaths
“Warm days are defined as above 13.8 degrees Celsius and cold days below 6.4 degrees Celsius.”
But can’t see total deaths from warm days or cold days to compare against. Am I missing something?

I can’t be doing with this. The ONS produces two papers, purporting to measure the same thing, but between the two they change both the scope of study and methodology of data collection –unsurprisingly getting different results — and they just leave the reader to sort out the mess for themselves. For example, they change the criterion so that only excessively hot days and cold days are compared, but as Gemini points out, the exposure-response curve for the two threats is entirely different. If you focus only upon the deaths during excessive cold you completely miss the longer-term impact of cold weather; even during periods that are not that unusual for winter. This is an obvious mistake, and when organisations make obvious mistakes that just happen to serve the narrative, people like me are bound to get twitchy.
Also, in the first paper, they report the trend of net mortality over time so that the impact of climate change can be judged, but, unless I missed it, there is no such summary in the second paper. I’m twitching again.
P.S. I’ve never been able to work out why the ONS doesn’t cover Scotland.

Yes, but the gap also narrowed dramatically once we chose to ignore the chronic nature of cold-related death and stopped counting those that fell outside of the “coldest days”.
I don’t know how these people can claim statistical trends with a straight face when they blatantly change the statistical methodology from one count to the next.

Why stop at only counting “the coldest days”? If you introduce the rule that the cold-related death has to fall on a weekend you will probably be able to get the heat deaths to overtake the cold deaths by next Wednesday!
What really pees me off here is that these authorities will continue to accuse the sceptic of misinformation when they are themselves guilty of deception on an industrial scale here. Of course, it may just be self-deception I suppose. I wouldn’t rule that out. Good statisticians do not necessarily make good scientists.
