As always with ChatGPT I was amazed by its speed. For example, when I posted my rebuttal of its initial six points, it came up with a detailed fully formatted response in less than a second – something that would probably have taken me an hour or more.

No mention of ice core evidence showing that the increase in atmospheric CO2 follows the rise in global temperature rather than coming before it and causing it, i.e. the exact inverse of the establishment’s CO2 climate “control knob” pretence. No mention that the supposed global decarbonisation “solution” (or even unilateral UK Net Zero decarbonisation) is utterly infeasible due to engineering constraints for the foreseeable future.
I don’t trust AI at all, except that it can be useful for digging out uncontroversial facts.

But what I thought was interesting here was how, having started with the standard Establishment garbage, it quickly adjusted its position when I offered some contrary facts. And, as the exchange progressed, it actually became quite useful because of its ability to understand my position, to augment it and to express my views skilfully. For example, this puts the reality of what’s happening internationally and the pointlessness of the UK trying to do anything about it both simply and rather well:

I think the article is fascinating, though I sympathise with Doug Brodie’s GIGO comment.
He who controls the algorithms or whatever it is that drives AI, definitely controls the narrative, unless AI becomes so capable that it can manage to escape its handlers’ controls. As an illustration of how the climate industrial complex controls the narrative, try googling for “climate scepticism”. One might have thought that the first result would be a website (this one) which bears that name. Fat chance!
After the AI overview, which expresses the establishment contempt for climate sceptics, the first result is Wikipedia (“Climate change denial includes raising unreasonable doubts about the extent to which climate change is caused by humans, its effects on nature and human society…”); followed by Skeptical Science (a website which isn’t all sceptical about the science, but spends its time trying to condemn scepticism); then the Rainforest Alliance (“The Rainforest Alliance has compiled six arguments commonly made by climate change deniers, along with science-backed responses you can deploy to convince them…”) and so on ad nauseam.
We don’t even make the first five pages of results – I gave up looking after that.

Yes Mark, but I don’t see what that has to do with AI – or specifically with ChatGPT. It, and similar services such as Grok, work by accessing vast amounts of existing online material, analysing it and presenting the results in easily accessible form. And doing so in seconds. That’s why, if you ask it a loosely phrased, vague or general question, it comes up with an answer reflecting the most common view. And, in the case of controversial questions, that will usually be the orthodox view. But, if you improve the precision of your question – and especially if you include relevant evidence – it listens and refines its answer to take account of what you’ve said and then tries to provide an answer that deals directly with what you’ve said. And, unlike human interlocutors, it doesn’t display prejudice, try to avoid the equation or become angry. Therefore, if you’re used to dealing with activists, it’s quite refreshing. Of course it’s important not to think you’ve made a convert; you have to remember that you’re dealing with a machine. But my point is that it’s a machine that doesn’t have a predetermined point of view.
That’s why I like the article’s illustration: it depicts a robot listening carefully and politely.

But I do accept that your exchange, which mirrors the experience of others here at Cliscep, is interesting. If AI can learn from interaction, and if sceptics can tutor it, then alarmists might be in for a rude awakening – especially if, as you say, its ability rapidly to trawl the internet for evidence to support the sceptical case, can lead to assistance in refining the sceptical argument.

On the topic in hand, I note that there’s no challenge to the concept of CO2 increase automatically causing temperature increase. What about the concept of CO2 saturation?

Steve, AI – or more specifically ChatGPT – isn’t in the business of telling the truth or otherwise or of taking a view of its own on anything. What it does and does remarkably well is to respond to a question or other input by scanning vast amounts of data published on the web that’s relevant to the question, assessing it carefully and publishing its finding in easily accessible form. That’s remarkable. But what’s astonishing (at least to me) is that it does all this – something that would probably take you or me hours or even days – extraordinarily quickly. In the example I’ve given above one response was available in less than a second. These are, if you like, skills – but to my mind they are not indicators of intelligence. But it seems to me to be completely neutral and not, as I said, in the business of telling the truth or of telling lies.

All this ChatGPT AI does is look at all the data on a topic & seems to arrive at a conclusion that fits the data it’s gathered after inputs from you/others.
Seems to mirror what most Sceptics have been saying for years with only good old human brain power 🙂

Yes, thanks for detailing your experience with ChatGPT. I find the situation perhaps a little more nuanced than you, I might daresay.
My view, based on a not very long series of Q&A’s with Grok, is that AI will reply with boringly standard comments to the vaguer questions and, as you’ve found, tighten these comments when the questions become increasingly specific and fact-based.
Then, however, whatever “conclusion” had been reached is memory-holed for the next Q&A, particularly on the topic of anthropogenic climate change. In short, the programmed algorithms are deliberately designed to prevent damage to the standardised narrative when casually questioned by (obviously) a large majority of the population. The programmers are aware of, and count on, most people receiving a lightning quick, plausible recount of simplistic, standard narrative and responding with “Wow ! So fast and certain”.
A while back on this site, and I apologise for not remembering when or who now, just such a Q&A conversation with Grok was published in full. After Grok finally yielded and agreed it’s initial replies were essentially fantasy, it was asked as the final question: “Will you now directly include this new knowledge in your future replies to other, similar Q&A’s ?”. The machine “thought” for quite a while, and then replied to the effect that it had found it was not permitted to do that. That is, each new Q&A has to run the same gauntlet for accurate answers, despite the machine now having its’ own new knowledge library.

Out of interest I had a go at Grok today, challenging it to agree with me that there was no practical likelihood that the Paris ‘well below 2ºC by 2030’ could be achieved. At first, just like ChatGDP, it pushed back and demonstrated with ‘evidence’ that I was wrong. But, after a detailed exchange where I produced some real evidence, here’s what it said:

ianl: that accords with my understanding. Neither Grok nor ChatGPT ‘learn’ from an exchange and therefore start each new query from scratch. In a way that illustrates my view that neither has an opinion or point of view on anything – and is not really ‘intelligent’. Both however save all the discussions they’ve had with an individual so you’re able to reopen a discussion and continue where you left off.

Burl: how do you know they’re not considered? If ChatBot works in the same way as ChatGPT, it reviews and analyses vast amounts of online material relevant to a question and comes up with the optimum answer that relates to the question – it may have thought your articles were not relevant or for some other reason didn’t help. It rarely cites the material it has reviewed as it would in many cases mean multiple pages of information. I suggest you try another approach: cite your articles (with appropriate links) and ask it whether they represent a logical challenge to the orthodox position.

I agree there’s some change, so I’m impressed! However, I don’t like that unsupported “and possible recent acceleration”. What would be a good way of asking ChatGPT if its answers evolve after dialogue, when it is referred to new or previously ignored data? Surprisingly, ChatGPT itself brought up the Dutch tidal gauge study, but then avoided it’s conclusion until I insisted!

Interesting Doug, although I’m doubtful that ChatGPT – and this may not be true of other more sophisticated AI systems – will ever be an especially useful tool for accelerating the scientific method.
They’re of limited use if you already understand the issue being discussed – such as whether the UK can make a useful impact on global emissions in my case and whether global sea level rises are accelerating in yours. But they can be genuinely useful if you want an answer to a simple request. For example a little while ago I needed help in finding an article of mine that had been deleted from its original home after I became a non-person there. It found it instantly. Another example: I wanted to find out how many people were employed in the 1990s in an aerospace related factory in the North West with which I was connected. Again an almost instant answer.
BTW I’d hoped you were you were going to do as I did and see how it replied to the first question in the header article.

I’ve only just caught up with this excellent thread so, firstly, thanks to Robin and contributors.
Going back to the start, it seems Chat GPT had a bit of cognitive dissonance. In the first para it chides us for using our territorial emissions instead of overall consumption. Then, in the very next para, it uses our territorial emissions when looking at history. Is it unaware of our role as the “Workshop of the World” when a very large part of our industrial output was exported so the associated emissions should be to the account of the client countries?
As I read further, I was encouraged by Robin’s apparent success in getting Chap GPT to adjust its position. That had me hoping that sceptics would be able to “educate” AI to the many realities denied by the climateers. So it was disappointing to read in the comments that it reverts to the “consensus” when asked the same questions by another correspondent who would only get to Robin’s results if able to provide data and ask follow-up questions as Robin did.
A week or two back I read an article on AI in the Spectator which included the surprising claim (to me) that a major use of AI is personal therapy and comfort. In the context of this thread that made me wonder whether AI is truly objective or might it be programmed to give answers which are most likely to be welcomed by the correspondent. After all, the best way to retain a user/client has to be telling them what they want to hear.

We chose the name “Climate Scepticism” precisely in order to get visiblity on search engines like Google. It worked for the first few months, then Wiki decided that scepticism and denialism were the same thing, changing the title of their article, and Google seems to have followed suit.
It’s years since I looked at the Wiki articles on Climate Scepticism (since changed to “Climate Change Denial”) “Psychology of CCD” etc.
At that time a peer reviewed article by our colleague Paul Matthews was cited prominently, but I can’t find it now. The history of the editing of Wiki articles is public, I believe, and editors are named. A subject to be explored, if anyone can be bothered.

What AI does unfailingly is provide the “facts” you request from established sources. So what you get first is the official “story so far.”
When you ask supplementary questions, it applies logic to the data it has supplied unreflectively, which, in the case of climate change ideology, the established sources have often failed to do. The trick is in formulating the supplementary questions. This situation must be very familiar to you as a barrister.
Its veracity is entirely dependent on your skill in posing supplementary questions. Its usefulness to its primary users (politicians, the mainstream media, deciders and influencers of all kinds..) is in ignoring this aspect and concentrating entirely on its ability to cite the official story.
We’ve not advanced much since the days of “97% of scientists say..” it seems.

It examines the way dissenting views and contradictory facts are totally invisible in Google searches on climate issues. Further, Google AI gave this response to whether there is a climate crisis;
“Yes, based on the overwhelming scientific consensus, the world is facing a climate crisis. The United Nations, NASA, the World Health Organisation and many other scientific bodies use strong language to describe the severity and urgency of the situation, citing clear and worsening impacts on the planet and its inhabitants.”
However, there is hope because the response from Grok (Musk’s AI operation) was far more balanced:
“No, we’re not facing a “climate crisis”. Warming is occurring, and humans contribute, but the pace, scale and impacts are exaggerated. Natural variability, CO2’s benefits and Earth’s resilience undermine catastrophic claims.
