Better Built Boris Bites Back

Ben Pile has been tweeting about Boris’s conference speech, delivered on screen with the slogan “Build Back Better” prominently displayed behind him, a slogan which he seems to have borrowed from this organisation. 

Here is Ben on Twitter:

This is extraordinary. Totally divorced from reality. By any comparison with historical moments that precipitated change, such as plagues or wars, Covid19 deaths would not register. This desire for change from the old normal is entirely located in degenerate political elites.

Here is the UK Build Back Better coalition’s membership. The Tories used the slogan of green campaigning organisations and left-wing think tanks.

If you don’t know who the European Climate Foundation and Oak Foundation are, where have you been? In short, they are the vehicle for green billionaires to pump money under cover of “philanthropy” to political activists, to lobby for policies that suit their investments.

So why are the Conservatives using their slogan? 

1. Because they lack any originality or connection to the public.

2. Because the European Climate Foundation also fund Conservative think tanks and dodgy MPs campaigns, too.

Johnson’s whole speech can be found here. Here’s the part where he talks about Build Back Better:

But after all we have been through it isn’t enough just to go back to normal. We have lost too much. We have mourned too many. We have been through too much frustration and hardship just to settle for the status quo ante – to think that life can go on as it was before the plague; and it will not. Because history teaches us that events of this magnitude – wars, famines, plagues; events that affect the vast bulk of humanity, as this virus has – they do not just come and go. They are more often than not the trigger for an acceleration of social and economic change, because we human beings will not simply content ourselves with a repair job. We see these moments as the time to learn and to improve on the world that went before. That is why this government will build back better. And to explain what I mean by build back better, I will use a medical metaphor. 

But he doesn’t. Instead he starts talking about his mojo.

Then he talks about the many improvements to be made to infrastructure, particularly the health service, a section which ends with:

We will fix the injustice of care home funding, bringing the magic of averages to the rescue of millions.

Then, after health, this:

And if we are to raise productivity and encourage investment in the UK, then there is one thing we must do as a matter of basic hygiene; and that is to fight crime.

The short paragraph on fighting crime that follows finishes with a promise of:

“stopping the whole criminal justice system from being hamstrung by what the Home Secretary would doubtless and rightly call the lefty human rights lawyers and other do-gooders.”

Do-gooders like Craig Murray, I suppose, the ex-ambassador who was sacked for revealing British complicity in torture, and who is the only journalist reporting on the Stalinist show trial of Julian Assange, who has already been tortured in a British maximum security prison for a year (though not accused of any crime in the UK) before being handed over to the US to be tortured some more.

Then education, and on to the green economy:

And there is one area where we are progressing with gale force speed; and that is the green economy, the green industrial revolution that in the next ten years will create hundreds of thousands if not millions of jobs. I can today announce that the UK government has decided to become the world leader in low cost clean power generation – cheaper than coal, cheaper than gas; and we believe that in ten years time offshore wind will be powering every home in the country, with our target rising from 30 gigawatts to 40 gigawatts. 

You heard me right. Your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your heating, your plug-in electric vehicle – the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around these islands. We will invest £160m in ports and factories across the country, to manufacture the next generation of turbines. And we will not only build fixed arrays in the sea; we will build windmills that float on the sea – enough to deliver one gigawatt of energy by 2030, 15 times floating windmills, fifteen times as much as the rest of the world put together. Far out in the deepest waters we will harvest the gusts, and by upgrading infrastructure in such places as Teesside and Humber and Scotland and Wales we will increase an offshore wind capacity that is already the biggest in the world.

Finishing with a triumphant:

As Saudi Arabia is to oil, the UK is to wind…

Sounds as though climate sceptics and other seditious doubters might be in for some nasty Kashoggi-like fate. No wonder he wants to do away with those do-gooder human rights lawyers.

Back to the BuildBackBetter organisation:

As Ben notes, it is funded by the Oak Foundation and the European Climate Foundation, which in turn is funded by the Dutch National Lottery and five American Foundations funded by dead American billionaires, including the The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, which I’ve mentioned before here with follow up articles here and here.

The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation has in turn paid more than $25 million to the Clinton Foundation, and is now funding an organisation keeping Boris in catchy slogans, apparently. The Conservative Party is therefore the indirect beneficiary of the Foundation’s decision to spend less on stopping African babies from getting AIDS, and more on paying the salaries of men in suits in various Green pressure groups. Funny world.

BuildBackBetter has a lot of supporters, including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, CND, Campaign against Climate Change, Doctors for Extinction Rebellion, Extinction Rebellion Scientists, Women in Prison, and a number of Christian, feminist and health service groups. No wonder the Guardian was muted in its criticism of Boris, standing in front of his American Billionaire-funded slogan smirking, as if to say: “Throw brickbats at me, and the Quakers, Nurses and Women in Prison get it.” 

Meanwhile, the plot by two Guardian journalists to throw an Australian journalist into a prison worse than Guantanamo is not being reported by the Guardian. Nor is the plot by Hillary Clinton, supported by President Obama, to invent a Russian connection to Trump’s election campaign, as recently revealed by an FBI employee. Nor the fevered attempts to isolate Russia with invented poison plots, in order to justify who knows what military actions. None of this is coming to the notice of thousands of decent Christians and leftwing activists hypnotised by a vision of utopia filled with electric buses powered by floating windmills, all to be delivered by Boris’s business friends at a very reasonable price, to be determined by an algorithm at this moment gestating in Dominic Cummings digestive tract. 

This isn’t what you voted for.

    I was going to tackle this – and Trump generally – in my next ‘baloney’ effort. In terms of the big picture it has to be the most important, at least as the picture appears to me. We’re bound to get some details wrong as well of course. But we try to express the truth as best we can, as you have done here. That sure ain’t bikeshedding.

    I didn’t know about BuildBackBetter and had forgotten about the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. Richard Black I do remember. Quite a nice guy the one time we chatted. But the corruption is endemic by now, to use the medical analogy Boris missed.

    Thought I’d throw that in here, because it’s how I feel we need to be. And this:

    I found that speech in the Commons by a Corbynista pretty good, except for the climate justice delusions. Here’s another leftie who doesn’t get all his ducks in a row but may be worth listening to in the light of some of the above:

    Cummings and Banks in friendly cahoots? That would be a first for the “rudest man I’ve ever met” and whatever unpronouncables prompted that.

    Minor baloney but still some questions to ask.

  3. BuildBackBetterUK is no more for the moment than a website cobbled together by activists de-activated by the lockdown. A quick search reveals the term being used at joebiden.com (no date but after June 11th.) June 11th is the date of an article at the UN site https://news.un.org/en/story/2020/06/1066152 “What does ‘build back better’ really mean? One of the world’s top CEOs give us his take,” which is an interview with the head of Thailand-based CP Group – one of the world’s largest conglomerates. 
    “We have some 350,000 workers, and we told them that there would be no layoffs. In fact, we are hiring 20,000 delivery staff. This also helps us to ensure business continuity.”

    So it’s an Asian capitalist thing, with add on UN-friendly references to sustainability and neutral carbon footprints, which has crossed the world almost as fast as the virus and been taken up by Quakers, feminists and CEOs alike.

    My hunch is that the Green grass roots aren’t going to like it. It’s got the nobs of Extinction Rebellion (the doctors and scientists) on board but not the organisation itself. Boris’s adoption may have killed it off for good.

  4. I belived I warned back in April that loony lockdown economics was in imminent danger of being ‘baked in’ as loony Green economics. Build Back Better is just the buzz phrase for that process, or Green Recovery, or Build Back Greener, or Great Reset, call it what you will:

    “Today, we have adults panicked into taking action on Covid-19 who have destroyed the hopes and aspirations of the younger generation, wrecked their education and who are busy bequeathing to them an austere future where their parents are out of work and their prospects for their own futures look bleak. This is basically the same as #netzero or the Green New Deal of course, but a global depression won’t save the planet in the process.     The five organisers of https://www.greennewdealuk.org, all very young, are from Avaaz, Wemove.eu, UK Youth Climate Climate Coalition, Greenpeace, UK Student Climate Network, Youth Strikes for Climate, UK Uncut, 350.org, the Labour Party, and the Green Party.

    https://www.greennewdealuk.org is currently funded by grants from the European Climate Foundation, Oak Foundation and the Gower Street Foundation. The presence of the first two familiar names is no surprise, since their policy seems to be to let their money trickle down through the largest possible number of conduits, maximising visibility and presumably influence.

    The Gower Street Foundation is interesting. It describes itself as “a small family trust which works with partners in Ghana to try to achieve systemic change within the education system to improve learning outcomes for children. we will only consider unsolicited applications for grants if they fall strictly within these criteria and do we not fund religious based charities.”

    More on their policy is revealed in the announcement of a “Dinner & Discussion for the Philanthropic Community” organised by Synergos.org

    at which one of the founders of the Gower Street Foundation, Sophie Marple, explains how:

    “for the first 9 years [they] focused on supporting girls’ education in Sub-Saharan Africa. After re-evaluating their grant giving three years ago, they moved their focus to the fight for a liveable climate, upon discovering that less than 3% of UK philanthropic capital is deployed towards the crisis.”

    Here’s the thing, Ms Marple. If you fund girls’ education in Ghana, there’s a good chance a lot of the money will actually get to girls in Ghana and achieve some good. If you deploy your money towards the climate crisis, it goes to pay the wages of bright, well-intentioned young people who might otherwise be doing something useful with their lives, instead of setting up websites to co-ordinate action to set up other websites to eventually organise a demo which results in a few deluded souls supergluing themselves to Boris Johnson ‘s bottom.

    The Holistic Disaster Recovery handbook was funded by PERI, a tax-exempt non-profit that in 2013 was absorbed by PRIMA, a bigger tax-exempt non-profit that is also devoted to sustainability bafflegab.

    From PERI’s self-description before it was swallowed by PRIMA:

    The Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI) is an independent thought leader [bonus point!] and definitive resource for risk management, serving public entities, small businesses and small nonprofit organizations.     Much of a risk? No idea. I’m not much of a riskologist thought leader. But surely such behaviour was unwise?

    Ms Marple? She has given at least £15k of her family’s money to XR UK, although only £10k of that is included in XR UK’s current online list of ‘large donations’:

    The other £5k came from one of her charitable family trusts. The current Marple charitable trust is the Gower Street Foundation that Geoff mentions. Somewhat oddly, that ‘charity’ was registered under that name and with a brand new charity number within a few days plus or minus of Ms Marple’s charitable £5k donation to XR, so did that donation come from the earlier and now defunct Marple Charitable Trust that was apparently all about education and was declared to be active in Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and, er, Islington, or did it come from the brand new Marple family trust that was registered a few days before or even a few days after the XR donation and had a much broader declared purpose?

    This smells of someone realising that they might have abused (or be about to abuse) their charitable status so they quickly put things right by ditching the old ‘charity’ and setting up a new ‘charity’ (Gower Street) with broader declared aims.

    Not that it really matters. It’s insane that such opaque family trusts should have charitable status in the first place, whether their declared aims are to help educate impoverished girls in Ghana and Islington or to help posh dropouts glue their bottoms to BoJo.

    This one isn’t so opaque now, thanks to your detective work, and Ms Marple’s disarming frankness. I don’t think it’s their bottoms they’re gluing.

    I’m not against charitable status for rich people who want to help educate girls in Ghana, or even in Islington (where Ghanaian girls now live in some numbers, I happen to know from personal experience.) And having two granddaughters who were educated in a neighbouring borough, I suspect Islington’s needs may be greater.

  9. It is looking more and more likely that the coup here in America will succeed.
    The debate fiasco, where the debate commission simply changed the rules with impunity, and it is clear the so-called moderator was an actual employee of Biden, I’d just one example.
    The apparent success of simply dismissing the President’s covid recovery is another.
    Now the President is being attacked as being crazy.
    Perhaps the biggest tell is that after four years, the origins of the coup- Hillary’s Russiagate scam- is openly known. And dismissed.
    The Judge in the infamous Gen. Flynn case is openly and with impunity conspiring with Clinton players and *prosecuting* Gen. Flynn directly.
    This is unprecedented and cannot end well for America or the world.
    We may be electing an obviously corrupt puppet in less than a month, as well as effectively going under radicalized one-party rule.
    This is beyond amazing.
    This could get really really bad really fast.

Ms Marple got switched on to climate change by an ‘open letter’ signed by ‘eleven leading UK scientists’ (Julia Steinberger, Lorraine Whitmarsh et al) in May 2019 and sent to the UK’s 100 wealthiest families and the UK’s 100 top charitable family foundations. I say ‘open letter’ but only snippets of it are available online.

    The letter was organized by a one-woman outfit called One Home that is now backing a new eco-effort called Count Us In.
